Week 2

 Week 2 - Fiber Optic

When it comes to networking connections and the different options, Fiber Optic is only one of the fastest speeds available that is often used on the general consumer market when it comes to high-level internet speed. So, why is fiber optic so good for home networks?

Well, the first point is to address what exactly fiber optic cables are composed of. Regular cables that are often used for internet connections are used with what we call coaxial cables, which are made of copper, aluminum, plastic, and copper. While fiber optic cables use silica (glass composition). These cables carry light and have a cylindrical rod that doesn't pull electricity. Because of this, they are not as susceptible to electromagnetic interference. Some of the other benefits are higher bandwidth, long-distance transmission, lower signal degradation, and being small and lightweight. All of these factors come together to make fiber optic cabling, when accessible, to be the best option for home networks.
